Synopsis

"McAlpine's wispy narration is a great fit...a satisfying start to a new series." —AudioFile on The Fireborne Blade

A tale of honor, dragons, and a love that endures beyond death

Come for the journey through the underworld. Stay for the suspiciously familiar winged cat.

After their dubiously successful quest to slay the White Lady and recover the Fireborne Blade, Sir Maddileh and Saralene set about changing their world for the better. But the cursed and newly-promoted High Mage Saralene must visit the afterlife to ask a favor of the Bloodless Princes who run the underworld.

But Saralene and Sir Maddileh will soon discover that the old tales only hold so much truth in them, though perhaps there’s enough to make a start on their new journey.

To escape the underworld alive, Saralene will need a lot more than just her wits. And Maddileh will need more than just her Fireborne Blade.

4.5 stars rounded up This was a great conclusion to this fantasy novella duology! I love how it played with format and included in-world folktales from different perspectives. It explores how history looks quite different depending on who gets to frame it. But we're following our two heroines from th......more

There is no doubt that The Fireborne Blade is a superior novella this one, it’s sequel. It had more wit, sarcasm, plot twists, and overall allure than its sequel The Bloodless Princes. We still get snippets of tales, writings, history and lore of the realm woven into the story (which I also adored i......more

This was a really unique sequel. It still had the same slower pace as The Fireborne Blade, but there was such a unique expansion to the world building. I especially loved the unique folklore we got showing the differences between dragon tales and troubadour that highlighted how history can differ ba......more

4.5 Stars. Charlotte Bond knows how to write a compelling story, and pack a big punch in a little novella. I love her characters and her ability to pull you into the story and make you genuinely care what’s going to happen. Dare I say that Bond is the T Kingfisher of sword and sorcery? I cannot wait......more

A worthy sequel, with nice character progression and expansion of the fourteen kingdoms and beyond. Packs quite a bit of story into a short novella — sometimes not to its benefit, as I think some of the bigger moments would have greater impact if given some more time to build. Looking forward to the......more

The Fireborne Blade is fresh, well-crafted, and engaging. A knight, squire, and dragon adventure like none you've ever read!” —Juliet Marillier

“A monstrously clever gem, chilling, dark and full of character.” —Adrian Tchaikovsky

The Fireborne Blade is a delightful romp through a vibrant, surprising world of mages, knights, and dragons. I loved following Maddileh through her adventures!” —Kelly Robson

“Like its claustrophobic, dimly lit passageways, Bond’s prose deftly tantalizes in this puzzlebox of a narrative. A quiet gem of a novella with much more lurking beneath the surface.” —Eliza Chan

“Highly inventive and entertaining. Charlotte Bond is an exciting new voice.” —Priya Sharma

“Love to finish a book and just go 'well, that was cool as ****'. This was a lot slicker and gnarlier than I was expecting going in. Terrific dragon lore, impeccable gore and body horror, and an engaging cast. Would happily read another handful of novellas in this setting or anything else Bond throws at us.” —Allison Seneca, Old Firehouse Books
