Synopsis

I jumped at this book when i saw it. Why there are not more historical fiction books set in the English Civil War I will never understand. The period is ripe for a creative author. It took me a while to adjust to the narrative style of the work, but once I did, I quite enjoyed it. Woodman paints General Monck (who was a major figure of the English Civil War, and the later Restoration) quite intriguingly, making him complex in his apparent simplicity. Great historical read Thoroughly enjoyable read,a story of one of history's lesser known soldiers. If you like a novel that is part a history lesson and part action novel,you will enjoy it. As for me onwards to the next instalment.......more
