Synopsis

Chaz Perrone might be the only marine scientist in the world who doesn’t know which way the Gulf Stream runs. He might also be the only one who went into biology just to make a killing, and now he’s found a way–doctoring water samples so that a ruthless agribusiness tycoon can continue illegally dumping fertilizer into the endangered Everglades. When Chaz suspects that his wife, Joey, has figured out his scam, he pushes her overboard from a cruise liner into the night-dark Atlantic. Unfortunately for Chaz, his wife doesn’t die in the fall.

Clinging blindly to a bale of Jamaican pot, Joey Perrone is plucked from the ocean by former cop and current loner Mick Stranahan. Instead of rushing to the police and reporting her husband’s crime, Joey decides to stay dead and (with Mick’s help) screw with Chaz until he screws himself.

As Joey haunts and taunts her homicidal husband, as Chaz’s cold-blooded cohorts in pollution grow uneasy about his ineptitude and increasingly erratic behavior, as Mick Stranahan discovers that six failed marriages and years of island solitude haven’t killed the reckless romantic in him, we’re taken on a hilarious, full-throttle, pure Hiaasen ride through the warped politics and mayhem of the human environment, and the human heart.

Ah, Florida. To most of you, it's a nutty state with lots of theme parks and beaches. But to me, it's my childhood home. I grew up there amongst the swamps, alligators, venomous snakes, and (most frightening of all) the snowbirds. You're from New York? You don't say... I live in By God South Carolina......more

3.5 stars In this 2nd book in the 'Mick Stranahan' series, the ex-cop helps a damsel in distress. The book can be read as a standalone with no problem. ***** I always enjoy Carl Hiaasen's satiric, comic novels - which generally highlight some atrocity humans are inflicting on the state of Florida. In......more

Ok, now I get it! And by "it" I mean all the Hiaasen hoopla among those with whom I share a certain brand of humor – an "it" that baffled me after my first encounter with Carl via Bad Monkey. We're back in Florida, where even the craziest of characters are plausible probable. Since I'm not exactly......more

Carl Hiaasen is right at home in that collective of modern, witty crime fiction writers who are neither Dashiell Hammett nor Raymond Chandler and hope against that you won't attempt the comparison. That he's good, there's no doubt. It's just: he's not genius. And that's fine. Not everyone can abide i......more

Carl Hiaasen's 'Skinny Dip' is the usual hilarious and bittersweet Hiaasen plot about fantastic and ridiculous criminals working legally under Florida's lax and corrupt government's environmental laws and victims who decide vigilantism will work better than Florida's legal system (not exactly untrue......more
