Synopsis

In a future where murder is not only legal but encouraged as emotional therapy, Stanton Frelaine eagerly awaits the name of his seventh Victim. Confident in his years of experience and eager to edge closer to the elite Tens Club, he heads to New York—only to discover that his target is a young woman who calmly accepts her fate. Rather than run or fight, Janet-Marie Patzig sits in plain sight, unarmed and seemingly resigned. Yet her strange composure pulls Frelaine toward her, blurring the line between Hunter and helpless participant. As he spends time with her, Frelaine finds himself torn between duty, desire, and the unsettling sense that something about Janet doesn’t add up. She is beautiful, fragile, and fatalistic… but also far more capable than she appears. In a society built on sanctioned violence and psychological ritual, their encounter becomes a tense struggle of instinct, deception, and survival—one that will test everything Frelaine believes about the hunt, the law, and himself.Robert Sheckley was one of the sharpest satirists in science fiction, known for blending humor, suspense, and biting social commentary. His stories often highlight the absurdity of human institutions by pushing them into exaggerated, speculative futures. A prolific author, Sheckley wrote hundreds of short stories and novels, many of which became foundational influences on later generations of sci-fi writers and filmmakers.Across his career, Sheckley’s inventive imagination and witty prose helped define an entire era of classic science fiction. His work frequently explored themes of bureaucracy, human nature, and the unintended consequences of advanced technology. Seventh Victim remains one of his most iconic stories, inspiring film adaptations and continuing to resonate with readers decades later.

About Robert Sheckley

Robert Sheckley was one of the funniest writers in the history of science fiction. He did screwball comedy, broad satire, and farce. He could also be deadly serious, but he was always entertaining and always had something pointed to say about our world using the skewed versions of reality he created in his fiction. Starting in the early 1950s, he was an amazingly prolific short story writer, with a lot of his stories appearing in Galaxy Magazine. He launched his novel-writing career with Immortality, Inc., which he followed up with a sequence of excellent books: The Status Civilization, Journey Beyond Tomorrow, and Mindswap. He continued to produce novels and short stories in abundance until his death in 2005.
