Synopsis

In The Secret Message of Jesus, McLaren clears away the dust of two thousand years of the Christian religion to get to the most important questions facing Christendom: Could it be that the church has misunderstood or, in some cases, intentionally distorted Jesus’ core message? What if Jesus was right—but right in different ways than we ever realized? What if many of us have carried on a religion that somewhere along the way missed rich and radical treasures hidden in the essential message of Jesus of Nazareth? // McLaren calls us to look hard, think deeply, and search long with him . . . even if the answers overturn our conventional ideas, priorities, and practices. // “Through the years, I have frequently had an uncomfortable feeling,” writes McLaren, “that the portrait of Jesus I found in the New Testament didn’t fit with the images of Jesus in the church.” Out of that nagging discomfort arose this ground-breaking book. He writes, “I’d like to share my search with you, and invite you to be a part of it. I don’t want to spoil the ending, but I’ll let you in on this: the farther I go on this search, the more inspired, moved, challenged, shocked, and motivated I become about the secret message of Jesus.”

McLaren does a great job of distilling Jesus's teachings and methods into a very readable and thoughtful book. The title is clickbait and should really be "What Jesus Actually Said in the Bible." Sadly, a lot of what Jesus said is lost in the evangelical American church today. McLaren is one of thos......more

This book completly transformed my way of thinking about Jesus. I went from knowing I needed Him. To really Loving Him. After reading the first couple pages of this book, I put it down. It was obvious that this book was going to shake my foundations and I wasn't sure I was ready yet. I did pick it up......more

Every now and then you read a book which makes you say "yes, that's what I have been thinking for a long time, but never quite been able to express so succinctly." CS Lewis is like that, and this book was like that for me too. Everything in the book is familiar to anyone who has been a Christian for......more

Quite radial: A sign of a good book is how much it makes you think and rediscover your views - not always how much you agree with the author. Luckily I had both of these boxes checked off :)......more

I liked this book mainly because the experience of reading it was a little bit like finding new windows to look through in the walls of the house where you've lived a very long time. McLaren's chapter on the parables of Jesus (Chapter 6: The Medium of the Message) made me think in fresh ways about w......more
