Synopsis

The work of a lifetime from the Tony Award–winning, bestselling author of The Vagina Monologues—political, personal, profound, and more than forty years in the making.

The newest book from V (formerly Eve Ensler), Reckoning invites you to travel the journey of a writer's and activist's life and process over forty years, representing both the core of ideas that have become global movements and the methods through which V survived abuse and self-hatred. Seamlessly moving from the internal to the external, the personal to the political, Reckoning is a moving and inspiring work of prose, poetry, dreams, letters, and essays drawn from V's lifelong journals that takes listeners from Berlin to Oklahoma to the Congo, from climate disaster, homelessness, and activism to family.

Unflinching, intimate, introspective, courageous, Reckoning explores ways to create an unstoppable force for change, to love and survive love, to hold people and states accountable, to reckon with demons and honor the dead, to reclaim the body, and to see oneself as connected to a greater purpose. It reimagines what seems fixed and intractable, providing a path to understand one's unique experience as deeply rooted in the world, to break through one's own boundaries, and to write oneself into freedom.

When I was young(er) I used to look disdainfully at comedies and comedians, as if they were lesser forms of art and performers respectively. I read "serious" books and watched arthouse dramas. Comedies were for the plebs. Luckily, I'm always willing to change my opinions when called for. In the last......more

'Is there anyone left who isn't totally in love with Magda Szubanski?' Well, yes in fact. Me. It is not that I dislike her. How could anyone do that after reading 'Reckoning'? It's just that, apart from her role as Sharon in the beloved 'Kath and Kim', she hasn't been on my radar much. I have never......more

If you pick up Reckoning expecting your standard, relatively light-hearted, comedian memoir… yeah, you’re in for a rude shock. It’s a pensive, penetrating story, told without pretension and with radical vulnerability. Szubanski doesn’t shy away from sharing the least flattering aspects of her own pa......more

The book blurb for Reckoning, Magda Szubanski's memoir, promises that it will 'touch the lives of its readers' and that it 'announces the arrival of a fearless writer and natural storyteller'. Both statements could not be truer. It's only increased our awe for this incredibly talented and beloved pe......more
