The Authorized Biography

Synopsis

In his probing and revelatory biography of one of the great prose stylists of the twentieth century, acclaimed biographer Michael Shelden breaks new ground in the evocation of George Orwells personal life and in our understanding of his art. Based on original interviews, previously undiscovered letters and documents, and astute literary detective work, Orwell is the major biography of one of the great yet elusive literary figures of our time. Shelden reveals the author of 1984 and Animal Farm as a lively, engaging literary personality. Few writers can rival Orwells experience of history: being shot through the throat in the Spanish Civil War, holding the position of colonial police superintendent in Burma, and living through the Blitz. Shelden restores a sense of drama and passion to this writers life and shows him to be a captivating, even heroic character struggling against great public and private turmoil.

Highly recommended for casual fans of Orwell -- you might, like me,......more

A wonderful read. Yes, as others have noted, this is a long book, but so varied and curious were the stages of Orwell's life that, if anything, I found myself wanting more not less. That Sheldon is himself a writer of unusual clarity makes him a perfect match for someone like Orwell who seemed espec......more

This comes across as a fair and balanced view of the life of George Orwell (though the writer does struggle to hide his dislike of Sonia, Orwell's second wife). I suppose the trouble any Orwell biographer faces is that Orwell put so much of himself into both his fiction and non-fiction works that a......more
