Cold Atlantic Waves Lapping Against Steep Fjord Walls at Dusk

Norwegian fjords are some of the deepest and most acoustically distinctive waterways on Earth. The steep rock walls that rise hundreds of metres on either side create a natural sound chamber, amplifying and reflecting the sound of waves in ways that open coastline never could.
This recording captures the evening soundscape of a western Norwegian fjord: cold Atlantic waves lapping against sheer rock faces, their sound bouncing between the fjord walls in a slow, echoing rhythm. Seabirds — kittiwakes and fulmars — call from ledges high above the water, their cries reverberating through the enclosed space.
The light at this latitude creates an extended twilight that lasts for hours, and the sound reflects this liminal quality: neither day nor night, neither ocean nor river, but something uniquely in between. The water is remarkably calm compared to open ocean — the fjord walls provide shelter from prevailing winds, leaving only the gentle, persistent pulse of the tide.
