Synopsis

"Murder by the Clock," written by Rufus King in the late 1920s, is a detective novel that follows the story of Mrs. Endicott, who is deeply concerned for her husband Herbert's safety. Fearing for his well-being, she contacts the police for help, which leads to the shocking discovery of a dead body in his room.
As the narrative unfolds, Detective Lieutenant Valcour takes on the investigation, delving into the circumstances surrounding the murder. He explores the strained relationships and hidden secrets that may provide motives for the crime. At the beginning of the story, Mrs. Endicott is overwhelmed with anxiety about her husband, whom she believes could be in danger due to his involvement with a mysterious woman named Marge Myles.
During her conversation with Lieutenant Valcour, the tension mounts as his investigation uncovers various clues, including a threatening note and signs of a struggle. The chilling revelation of Herbert's body found in the cupboard heightens the urgency of Valcour's inquiry. This leads to a detailed examination of marital dynamics, possible motives for murder, and the shocking twists that unfold as the night progresses.

Two and a half stars for the ingenious twists and turns and the organisation of chapters by time over a twenty-four hour period. The twist at the end, I thought detracted from the story. A clever puzzle, but not very engaging or satisfying as a world or narrative,......more

The very definition of an "okay" read. All of the characters went off into tangents that had basically nothing to do with the story, and the plot hangs together by the barest of threads in the end - this has to be the longest 200 pages I've ever slogged through. I prefer stories that are a bit more......more

This book was recently republished in the American Mystery Classic series. It was originally published in 1929. Philo Vance was the big thing in mystery stories then. Vance was a wealthy, pompous amateur detective who spoke like a fancy know-it-all. This book is in the Philo Vance mode. Lieutenant V......more

Brilliant! I couldn’t put it down. Masterfully written and beautifully contrived a Mesmerizing and immersive mystery by a most brilliant author. I loved it and will be reading more of Rufus King. It’s incredible this book was written in 1929 yet it could have been today it’s timeless. No wonder it is......more
