Synopsis

Meditations has been translated into English more than twenty times. This audiobook presents one of the most enduring versions — the classic translation by George Long — narrated in full, from the first page to the last. These are the private reflections of a Roman Emperor, written between 161 and 180 CE, during military campaigns far from Rome. Marcus Aurelius never intended them for publication. He wrote them for himself, as a way of returning, night after night, to the questions that mattered most: how to face death without fear, how to respond to difficult people without losing patience, how to live in agreement with nature when nothing is within your control except your own mind. This audiobook contains the complete, unabridged text of all twelve books, narrated by Daniel Carvalho, with a short editorial introduction placing the work in context.Eighteen centuries after it was written, Meditations remains one of the most listened-to works of philosophy in the world — not because it offers easy answers, but because it asks the right questions, in the voice of a man who had no audience but himself.Listen to the words of an emperor who ruled the known world, and chose, instead, to master himself.

About Marcus Aurelius

Marcus Aurelius (April 121–March 180) was Roman emperor from 161 until his death. He ruled with Lucius Verus as co-emperor from 161 until Lucius's death in 169. Marcus was the last of the "Five Good Emperors" and is also considered one of the most important Stoic philosophers. His tenure was marked by wars in Asia against a revitalized Parthian Empire and with Germanic tribes along the Limes Germanicus into Gaul and across the Danube. A revolt in the East, led by Avidius Cassius, who previously fought under Lucius Verus against the Parthians, failed.

Marcus's work Meditations, written in Greek while on campaign between 170 and 180, is still revered as a literary monument to a government of service and duty.
