Synopsis

Bring history back to life through Jim Hodges’ historically accurate, exciting, and edifying audio recordings. In the Heart of the Rockies is packed with adventure! In 1860, sixteen-year-old Tom Wade leaves England for the American Far West to find his uncle and to improve his family fortunes. Arriving at the small western outpost of Denver to mine for gold, he soon encounters Native American warriors, takes part in big-game hunts, and learns how to survive a frigid mountain winter with nothing but resourcefulness and perseverance. On their quest for a gold mine, he and his little band is spied on by Indians, chased across the Bad Lands, and overwhelmed by a snowstorm in the mountains. Henty’s descriptions of Colorado are taken from the official report of Major Powell’s four-year assignment from the US government to survey the Colorado River Valley. Tom Wade goes West as a boy … and returns as a young man.The Henty Historical Novel Collection, written by George Henty in the 1800s, covers many time periods in history throughout the world. About Jim Hodges

Jim Hodges began reading aloud in the second grade with a stirring rendition of Dick and Jane. He continued to volunteer to speak throughout his schooling years, performed as a newscaster while in the Navy, and participated in community theater groups. His wife, Monica, once asked what his dream job would be. He answered, “I’d record books.” And so began Jim Hodges Audio Books, producing unabridged recordings of the G. A. Henty historical novels, children’s books, Overtly Christian titles, and classic literature.

I enjoyed this book, though Henty is more than a little inconsistent on the issue of race. I was taken aback by the fact that he could create a narrative in which there was such a close bond between Straight Harry (a white) and Chief Leaping Horse (a "good" Indian), and simultaneously make offensive......more

Ehhhh... Henty's a bit off-brand in this one, and it shows. As much as I can grin over and mentally catalog all the usual Henty tropes, I really felt the lack of them here. To start with, the story only nominally belongs to Tom, as very few of the actions, decisions, or even ideas are in any way att......more

This was an interesting and educational read, but not my favorite Henty. I did like the setting in Colorado a couple hundred years ago; Tom joins an uncle and together they strike a rich mine, outwit and escape hostile indians, navigate the Colorado river, make it back alive, and eventually live hap......more

This was one of my favorite Henty's ever. The characters didn't feel flat, and the story was fun and engaging the whole way through. It didn't even pause in the middle of the story to relate the "historical" part of a battle or something, entirely separate from the rest of the story (which is a comp......more
