Synopsis

Hot Planet by Hal Clement is a tense, scientifically grounded adventure set on a dangerously unstable Mercury. The crew of the Albireo arrives expecting research, not catastrophe — yet relentless quakes, rising ash columns, and a growing volcanic threat turn their expedition into a desperate fight for understanding and escape. As the planet reshapes itself under their feet, the team struggles to make sense of the seismic chaos before it seals their fate.Told with Hal Clement’s signature blend of realism, imagination, and careful physics, the story unfolds through the eyes of scientists doing their best to stay calm in an environment that refuses to cooperate. Each new observation brings more questions, and every answer comes at a cost — including the possibility that not all of them will make it home.Hal Clement, born Harry Clement Stubbs, stands as one of the foundational voices of hard science fiction. Known for his meticulous worldbuilding and commitment to scientific accuracy, he crafted stories that challenged readers to think while still delivering thrilling adventure. A trained astronomer, educator, and pilot, Clement brought unmatched authenticity to his extraterrestrial environments. His work has influenced generations of writers, readers, and scientists. From Mission of Gravity to his short fiction, Clement’s legacy continues to shape the landscape of classic science fiction and remains essential reading for anyone who loves thoughtful, scientifically rich storytelling.

A real “nuts and bolts” SF tale of conditions on Mercury and a team trying to get scientific data and stay alive while doing so. I’m afraid I had trouble following it, not finding the subject or style at all interesting, leading me to skip a lot of it and thus not really understanding the ending.......more

Good read. Hal Clement is always a enjoyable venture into "What if" Not long enough though. Good protagonists and enough action to keep it moving along. Anything he writes is worth the effort to get it.......more
