Synopsis

Published in 1833, The Webster's Bible stands as a significant early American revision of the King James Version (KJV). Its creator, Noah Webster, is far more famous for his American Dictionary of the English Language. Motivated by the same patriotic and educational impulses that drove his lexicographical work, Webster sought to produce a Bible suited for the new American republic.Webster's primary goal was linguistic modernization and clarity, not doctrinal change. He respected the underlying text and structure of the KJV but made careful adjustments to its language. He systematically replaced obsolete words and phrases with contemporary equivalents, such as changing "wit" to "know" and "usury" to "interest." He also updated grammatical constructions, substituting "its" for the archaic "his" when referring to non-personal nouns, and modernized spelling throughout. This revision was groundbreaking as the first American effort to correct the KJV's language. Webster believed a Bible in the common vernacular was essential for education and moral instruction. While it never achieved the widespread ecclesiastical adoption of the KJV, its influence was cultural and scholarly. It served as a direct forerunner to more extensive revisions in the late 19th century. The Webster's Bible remains a landmark, reflecting the early American desire to shape a distinct national identity, even in sacred texts, through the power of updated and standardized language.

I have two New King James Version. Apparently, they have exactly the same text and style. I always prefer NKJV to other versions. It is a bit in between the old English KJV and the not so modern NIV. This edition is what I bring with me to church or whenever I travel. It is smaller and more handy. T......more

When given the opportunity to review the NKJV Spirit-Filled Life Bible I jumped at the chance. I had heard great things about the earlier editions of this Bible and so I was excited to receive this one as it is the third edition. The executive editor of this Bible is Jack W. Hayford. The copy I rece......more

I'm not sure if this is exactly the same bible I have. It is the NKJV, though, and you can't really go terribly wrong with this version. It is more dependable than most modern translations [NIV, Message, Living, etc]. I started off with the KJV [couldn't read it]. Then I went to the NIV and it was t......more
