Synopsis

An ongoing, episodic “prose comic” from which the pictures are summoned by the magic of words, Goon Squad is set in a version of modern-day Manchester. Its biggest divergence from the real city is that it—along with most other large urban centers—has a team of superheroes to protect it against unusual threats with which the conventional forces of law and order would have problems.Goon Squad, Volume 1: Special Talents is composed of six tales: “The New Girl,” “Nightclubbing,” “By the Water, by the Grave,” “Changes,” “No-No Dojo,” and “Exterminating Angel,” as well as an introduction read by the author.

The description for this audiobook is that it is a “prose comic”. This had the feel of having a comic described to you. And I found it very listenable. This was a fun read. It has been described as a comic book in prose form, and that's a pretty accurate description. Many of the "stories" end on cliffhangers—including the one which ends the book, so be warned. I tried to take a break between stories, since there was apparently about a month between......more

Jonathan L. Howard's idea of a prose comic book is really inspired. Things can be episodic or ongoing, arcs can get resolved and characters can transition to new plotlines. It really feels like the best parts of an ongoing comic and a science fiction novel combined.......more

This is a great superhero story. The characters are so very well crafted (interesting and complex) and their adventures are wonderful, both fun and very clever. If you like superhero stories, read these books.......more

Full disclosure: this was written by the author of my favorite book series, the Johannes Cabal Necromancer series. The audiobook is an enjoyable, fast listen. And while this is a collection of de-facto short stories, they really are a chronologic telling of the stories of the Goon Squad specifically......more
