Not that great, the book is all tell and little show. Characters sit around in endless meetings while the story passes them by. Matters aren't helped by an undeserved dollop of smug post-Brexit British exceptionalism.......more

Galaxias is a novel with a lot of energy that keeps one turning pages until the end - there is a cool epilogue but I really liked the actual end of the novel as it encapsulates the mixture of hope and tragedy of the main characters and it really humanizes powerfully an otherwise fairly hard-sf tale.......more

In short....boring and silly. Starts off OK, the sun disappears! But...(view spoiler)[then it disintegrates into a powerful being (just one apparently) doesn't like us and wants the galaxy to itself, so the chimps throw shit, sorry, the humans send out a spaceship which they build in no time and send off the widower (hide spoiler)]......more

This is a book that quite beautifully uses familiar SF tropes to explore how fragile we are as a species - and how robust and clever we can be too. 4.5 stars. SFX

Galaxias is an unapologetic thought experiment...the true protagonist here is Baxter's invented and inventive cosmology. The Times
