Synopsis

In this groundbreaking classic, a leading psychologist argues that there are many human intelligences.

"Brilliant." —New York Review of Books

When we call someone “intelligent,” we are often referring to traits like their high SAT score, their performance on an IQ test, or their ability to perform in today’s schools—which prioritize linguistic and mathematical abilities. Traits like these underlie most popular and psychological understanding of intelligence—but they tell a very incomplete story.

In this revolutionary classic, now updated with a new introduction, psychologist and educator Howard Gardner offers a dramatically different account: that by limiting our understanding of intelligence to “school smarts,” we miss the impressive range of talents and aptitudes that characterize the human species. Gardner instead posits the revolutionary theory of multiple intelligences, which encompasses musical ability to physical dexterity to deep knowledge of other persons—and of oneself—each of which merits the label “intelligence.”

In a penetrating update, Gardner’s Frames of Mind celebrates all forms of intellect—the varieties found in various animal species, plants, and ever-more powerful instruments of artificial intelligence.

This is one of those books on which many people opine who have not actually read it. Accordingly, we tend to see people scorning the theory of multiple intelligences, arguing that really "these are just skills rather than separate intelligences". As you may imagine, this book, the harbinger of the t......more

While the concept of this theory was interesting, the writing was unnecessarily verbose. I found it difficult to pick out the main ideas of the theory beyond the first three and many of the notes in the final chapters seemed like afterthoughts to add to the page count. Gardner writes like a theorist......more

I wrote a paper on Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences when I was working toward my master's in education. I didn't come down entirely on the anti-Gardner side of the fence but I was pretty critical about the lack of scientific evidence for separate "intelligences" and other imprecisions in hi......more

Author seems exceptionally qualified to research this subject, but he's a shit writer. Seems like he just uses the most obscure synonyms he can find as some type of vocabulary challenge. What the fuck does quadrivium mean, asshole, and why do you use it constantly? Overly verbose writing both aliena......more

Nonostante......more

Quotes

"The value of Frames of Mind is less in the answers it proposes than in the problems it poses. They are important problems, and time spent thinking about them will be time well spent."—The New York Times

"Timely, wide-reaching and in many ways brilliant....[Gardner's] effort to bring together the data of neurology, exceptionality development, and symbolic-cultural skills is not only heroic but it makes extremely evocative reading."—The New York Review of Books

"Mention Howard Gardner's name to a growing cadre of educators and the response verges on the reverence teenagers lavish on a rock star. The cult of Gardner began....with his book Frames of Mind."—Newsweek

"Because of [Frames of Mind] Gardner is both lionized and exploited as one of the most famous educational theorists in the world. His notion of multiple intelligences-including the idea that musical, athletic, and other talents are separate from, but as important as, high SAT scores-has inspired scores of books, journal articles, conferences, and lesson plans for public schools."
