Synopsis

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The third installment in the heartwarming and enchanting Emily Wilde series, about a curmudgeonly scholar of folklore and the fae prince she loves

A GLOBE AND MAIL BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR

Emily Wilde has spent her life studying faeries. A renowned dryadologist, she has documented hundreds of species of Folk in her Encyclopaedia of Faeries. Now she is about to embark on her most dangerous academic project yet: studying the inner workings of a faerie realm—as its queen.

Along with her former academic rival—now fiancé—the dashing and mercurial Wendell Bambleby, Emily is immediately thrust into the deadly intrigues of Faerie as the two of them seize the throne of Wendell’s long-lost kingdom, which Emily finds a beautiful nightmare filled with scholarly treasures.

Emily has been obsessed with faerie stories her entire life, but at first she feels as ill-suited to Faerie as she did to the mortal world: How can an unassuming scholar such as herself pass for a queen? Yet there is little time to settle in, for Wendell’s murderous stepmother has placed a deadly curse upon the land before vanishing without a trace. It will take all of Wendell’s magic—and Emily’s knowledge of stories—to unravel the mystery before they lose everything they hold dear.

In a Nutshell:The third book of the Emily Wilde series. Not a standalone. Great characters. Slow-ish pacing. Too convenient and flat in the plotting. Not as dark as could have been. Recommended in publication order only to those who are keen on completing the series. Not my favourite of the series......more

E-ARC generously provided by Del Rey/Ballantine Books via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much! 4 stars. Strangely comforting yet harrowing, Emily Wilde's Compendium of Lost Tales is the most romantic entry of the series to date and serves as a solid, slightly open ending fo......more

If I one day erupt into uncontrollable screams and go charging into the woods, tearing at my hair, who but Wendell will be to blame? 📍Release Date: February 11, 2025 That was not enough Emily and Wendell, I need more! A novella, at least. To begin with, I adored the faerie lore in this whole series......more

This was truly delightful. I’m ticked at my reading slump for making it so hard to finish this book, but I love these characters and it’s been forever since I’ve read a wonderfully character driven and cozy book. Love love love......more

4.5 stars Emily Wilde’s Compendium of Lost Tales is an enchanting conclusion to this trilogy. Though none of the books in this series have been completely cozy, this final installment takes on a more anxious, melancholy tone as Emily and Wendell explore a darker world. I love the way Heather Fawcett......more

Quotes

Praise for Emily Wilde's Compendium of Lost Tales

“Full of heart and wonder, Emily Wilde’s Compendium of Lost Tales is a conclusion fitting for its heroine: thoughtful, fantastical and dotted with thoroughly informative footnotes.”BookPage, starred review

“Fawcett delivers a perfect new entry in this series, which will enrapture readers with fantastic worldbuilding. A great pick for those who are fans of both Marie Brennan’s A Natural History of Dragons and Jane Austen novels.”—Library Journal, starred review

“The charming third (and final) installment in the Emily Wilde series cements Heather Fawcett as the queen of cozy, low-stakes fantasy.”Paste

Praise for Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands

“Like all good fairy tales, this book is enchantingly charming, with hints of razor-sharp teeth. My only complaint is that it ends; I want to live in Emily’s Otherlands forever.”Kiersten White, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Mister Magic

“Readers will be pleased that curmudgeonly Emily hasn’t lost too much of her edge, but she’s still susceptible to unexpected bonds of friendship.”Booklist, starred review

“Upping the danger and the darkness while still retaining all the beauty of the prose, this takes Emily’s story to new heights.”Publishers Weekly

“Love can change a person—or a faerie—in the most unexpected of ways, and it’s impossible to walk alongside Emily on her journey of scholarship, mapmaking and true love without rooting for her.”BookPage

“Wilde is a fantastic character: frosty and reserved, but also generous and kind . . . In many ways, the second Emily Wilde book is even more compelling than the first.”The Washington Post

Praise for Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries

“A heartwarming spin on fantasy lore”PopSugar

“The world-building here is exquisite . . . and the characters are just as textured and richly drawn. This is the kind of forlorn, folkloric fantasy that remembers the old, blood-ribboned source material about sacrifices and stolen children, but adds a modern gloss.”The New York Times Book Review, “Sizzling Hot Books for Cold Winter Days”

“Emily herself is delightful, brilliant but flawed, and often darkly funny. Her frustration with her feckless but charming colleague Wendell Bambleby is the perfect spark, and the romance is light but hits surprisingly hard when it chooses to.”The New York Times (Editors’ Choice)

“Fawcett grabs readers’ attention by drawing them into the folklore as well as the surrounding world. A great read for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Erin Morgenstern.”—Library Journal (starred review)

“The full cast of characters, well-developed faerie lore, and pervasive sense of cold add depth to the delightful proceedings, which include scholarship, yes, but also danger and a hint of romance.”Booklist (starred review)

“Follow the lights into the woods and dance with the fae under Emily’s careful guidance—just be sure not to get carried away.”BookPage
