Synopsis

New York Times bestselling author and illustrator Adam Rex has created a funny and timely conversation starter about how dull life might be if everyone always agreed

Everyone always agrees with Junior, including the mysterious voice from across the valley.

“Junior Junior is the greatest in the world!” he shouts.
“Junior Junior is the greatest in the world!” the echo shouts back.

Until one day, a new girl moves in next door. A disagreeable, rude girl who doesn’t think Junior is right all the time. Unable to stand living next door to someone like that, Junior runs to the valley to meet his echo. But when being around someone who agrees with him all the time is less fun than he imagines, Junior must decide if a new friend is worth admitting he was wrong.

I have no idea why this book is called The Echo - perhaps I'm terribly dense and missed that part. A mystery centred around the death of a homeless man, and why he chose to starve to death in a certain woman's garage, it is well written but rather confusing - I found myself backtracking occasionally......more

Minette Walters has been one of my favorite standalone mystery writers since I discovered her a few years back. I rank her up there with Margaret Millar in my list of favorite mystery authors. The Echo, originally published in 1997, was no exception. It was a perfect little gem; well, almost perfect......more

A bit over complicated and completely implausible. I liked the characters of Deacon the reporter, Terry the homeless boy and Billy the schizophrenic. The story for me was all over the place. Amanda was weird a femme fatale who as an architect you would think she could plan ahead. Good characterizatio......more

In my limited experience, Minette Walters's output is very up and down. The best of them (for me, so far, The Shape of Snakes, Disordered Minds and The Chameleon's Shadow) are tremendous -- just about as good as crime fiction gets -- but, on the other hand, there's, well, The Echo. Journalist Michael......more

“Rex smartly avoids didacticism in favor of employing humor to highlight the social skills of respectful disagreement and admitting when you’re wrong, making Junior’s plight both pertinent to our time and timeless.”—The Horn Book Magazine
