Synopsis

With a scientist's mind and an animal lover's compassion, world-renowned biologist Rupert Sheldrake presents a groundbreaking exploration of animal behavior that will profoundly change the way we think about animals--and ourselves. How do cats know when it's time to go to the vet, even before the cat carrier comes out? How do dogs know when their owners are returning home at unexpected times? How can horses find their way back to the stable over completely unfamiliar terrain? After five years of extensive research involving thousands of people who have pets and work with animals, Dr. Sheldrake proves conclusively what many pet owners already know: there is a strong connection between humans and animals that defies present-day scientific understanding. Sheldrake compellingly demonstrates that we and our pets are social animals linked together by invisible bonds connecting animals to each other, to their owners, and to their homes in powerful ways. His provocative ideas about these social, or morphic, fields explain the uncanny behavior often observed in pets and help provide an explanation for amazing animal behavior in the wild, such as migration and homing.Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home not only provides fascinating insight into animal, and human, behavior, but also teaches us to question the boundaries of conventional scientific thought, and shows that the very animals who are closest to us have much to teach us about biology, nature, and consciousness. This audiobook is expertly read and engineered by Brian Arens. It was produced and published by Echo Point Books & Media, an independent bookseller in Brattleboro, Vermont.

Here's the thing about Sheldrake and his theories. When you're reading them, they make perfect sense. They're internally consistent (pretty much) and his rationale seems waterproof, while he's actually talking to you. It's only as you start thinking about what you've read that you realize something'......more

My old dog Sam travels to work with me every Friday. See that happy face? That's Sam driving to work with me one Friday. I never say a word about it being Friday until I'm nearly walking out the door because he gets ridiculously excited and when he gets excited, he pees. Not just a dribble eithe......more

I can't go vouching for the scientific validity of this action research, but seldom has investigation of animals seemed so entertaining and so emotionally satisfying. Sheldrake asks questions few scientists would risk investigating, designs innovative experiments, and compiles fascinating evidence f......more

As with so many basically scientific books, it is very repetitive. But through the years, I am almost as repetitive as I retell the research and the findings. This isn't a dog story. This is a cosmic awareness moment as we learn that what connects us with our animals are morphic fields, that interco......more

My dog can tell when I'm coming home even though I arrive at varying times and on a bicycle and so it's hard to explain by timing or hearing or smelling something from far away. I would like to understand how dogs can do this. It is a legitimate scientific question. The book has numerous interesting......more
