Synopsis

It was the last place anyone should have called Home, the last place for kids to live —

The year is 1926. Dave's beloved father is dead and his stepmother doesn't want him. Only the HHB will take him in—Hebrew Home for Boys — Hell Hold for Brats. But Dave is tough and a troublemaker. He can take care of himself. If he doesn't like the Home, he'll run away and find a better place. Only it's not that simple...

About The Author

When GAIL CARSON LEVINE was growing up, her favorite book was Peter Pan by James M. Barrie, and she thought Wendy was an idiot for wanting to leave Neverland. Gail has been reading fairy tales all her life, but she didn't start writing them until she was grown up. Her eleven books for children include Newbery Honor-winning Ella Enchanted, available on audio from Listening Library, and the picture book Betsy Who Cried Wolf. She lives with her husband, David, and their Airedale terrier, Baxter, in a two-hundred-year-old farmhouse in New York's Hudson Valley.

I think these would be better: CHUTZPAH THE HARD WAY DAVE CAROS AND THE GREAT ORPHANAGE BREAKOUT GOTTA GET THAT CARVING HELL HOLE FOR BRATS THE GA......more

Dave, the hero of the story, is immediately endearing, as is his papa, whose loss I feel keenly. Even in his deep grief Dave retains his sense of curiosity and adventure, and he tries to dull his emotions and hurt by insisting to himself and others he doesn't need anyone. He is actually dying to be......more
