...................

A young queen.

Consecrated at birth as a royal goddess, Cleopatra learns early on from her father's experience that to rule means to fight. Politically astute, her deep love for Egypt means she'll do everything in her power to retain its autonomy from the all-devouring Romans.

A great emperor.

Julius Caesar is a legendary warrior whose might helped secure the Egyptian throne for Cleopatra's father. Years later, when he encounters the now Queen of Egypt, it is more than a meeting of rulers - it is a meeting of souls.

Together they could have ruled the world.

In Julius, Cleopatra finds the first person who challenges and respects her fiercely brilliant mind, who understands her duty and shares her passionate nature. Their union, forged in conflict, seems unbreakable, but are the bonds binding them to their countries even stronger?

Yet in a choice between love and duty, only one can win.

About Joanna Courtney

Joanna Courtney is a bestselling author of historical fiction, who discovered her passion for ancient history while studying medieval literature at Cambridge. It was whilst researching Cordelia, a tribal leader in middle England c500 BC, that she realised Cleopatra, a famous 'ancient' queen, ruled far later than Cordelia, coming to her throne in 52 BC, and a new idea was born - to explore the stories of three vital women, living and ruling in the vibrant and heated world around the Eastern Mediterranean in the years either side of the birth of Christ. Salome is the second in this series, exploring the events of Jesus' life through the eyes of a woman trapped at the heart of the controversy, and Mary of Magdala takes that story on into the early years of the Christian church - under-reported years, with a far greater female influence than the current churches seem prepared to admit.Find out more by visiting her website www.joannacourtney.com or find her on Facebook/joannacourtneyauthor or Twitter @joannacourtney1.

At the beginning of the book you'll f......more

I had a couple of issues with it and raised my eyebrow a few times, but I was here for some Cleopatra/Caesar and I got it. In light of that, I can't complain. A book hitting several of my "romantic couple" desires and actually being pretty good is frustratingly hard to find.......more

It's the first historical fiction novel in quite a while where I was perfectly content with the balance between history and fiction. Courtney has researc......more

3 stars. A tricky story to tackle in 350 pages! This is more of a story of Cleopatra, less so about the romance/relationship between her and Julius.......more

I always enjoy a Joanna Courtney novel. This one is centred around the relationship between Cleopatra and Caesar. There's some artistic licence taken with aspects of Cleo's life but, overall, it's a sweeping tale of love and duty.......more
