This is a really great book that a lot more people should know about. During Christ's time Israel was bloated with cultural baggage that negatively affected all family relationships. This was an uneven book for me. I loved the first half where the author details how Jesus shattered the stereotypes and rules surrounding women during his ministry, but I lost interest in the second half when the author seemed to wander around to lots of other topics.......more

Incredibly scholarly work with lots (I mean easily half the book) is footnotes. Generally I love that, but I got way tired of it--if it was that important, work it into the body of the text. She does a great job of explaining exactly how revolutionary Christ's treatment of women and children.......more
