Synopsis

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A woman who runs a cat rescue in 1920s Montréal turns to a grouchy but charming magician to help save her shelter in this heartwarming cozy fantasy from the New York Times bestselling author of the Emily Wilde series.

“Absolutely magnificent! Full of cats and magic, this is the kind of book you want to instantly reread. I loved every character, every cat, and every moment with all my heart!”—Sarah Beth Durst, New York Times bestselling author of The Spellshop

Agnes Aubert leads a meticulously organized life, and she likes it that way. As the proudly type-A manager of a cat rescue charity, she has devoted her life to finding forever homes for stray cats.

Now it’s the shelter that needs a new home. And the only landlord who will rent a space to a cat rescue is a mysterious man called Havelock—who also happens to be the world’s most infamous magician, running an illegal magic shop out of his basement. Havelock is cantankerous and eccentric, but not not handsome, and no, Agnes absolutely does not feel anything but disdain for him. After all, rumors swirl about his shadowy past—including whispers that his dark magic once almost brought about the apocalypse.

Then one day a glamorous magician comes looking for Havelock, putting the magic shop—and the cat shelter—in jeopardy. To save the shelter, Agnes will have to team up with the magician who nearly ended the world . . . and may now be trying to steal her heart.

Havelock is everything Agnes thinks she doesn’t need in her life: chaos, mischief, and a little too much adventure. But as she gets to know him, she discovers that he’s more than the dark magician of legend, and that she may be ready for a little intrigue—and romance—in her life. After all, second chances aren’t just for rescue cats. . . .

Quotes

“An absolute delight of a book, and one that I felt was written just for me. Fawcett’s whimsical setting and endearing characters (including the cats) will cast a spell on readers. I loved every word.”—Rebecca Ross, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Wild Reverence

“Reading Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter reminded me of flying through the pages of Howl’s Moving Castle for the first time—a warm and wondrous and magical experience. Fair warning: Yyou might be tempted to add another cat (or two or three) to your home menagerie after reading this book.”—Megan Bannen, USA Today bestselling author of The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy

“This is a perfect book.”—Kiersten White, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Fox and the Devil

“Absolutely magnificent! Full of cats and magic, this is the kind of book you want to instantly reread. I loved every character, every cat, and every moment with all my heart!”—Sarah Beth Durst, New York Times bestselling author of The Spellshop

“It’s been a long time since I so desperately wished to climb inside a novel and claim it for my home. This story feels like a gift—just for me!—but it will resonate with any reader searching for more magic, more kindness, more pastries in the world.”—Stephanie Perkins, New York Times bestselling author of Overdue

“Fawcett’s storytelling is where wonder meets whimsy and alchemizes to hope. Her writing has the lived- in quality of a beloved blanket, and I wanted to nestle into this book and never leave.”—Roshani Chokshi, New York Times bestselling author of The Last Tale of the Flower Bride

“Wistful, warm, and irresistibly charming, Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter is the perfect faerie tale for those in need of a cheer-up. The mortals are plucky, the magicians are cranky, and the cats are especially unconcerned about everyone else's problems. I finished it in a single afternoon, and instantly wanted more.”—Olivia Atwater, author of Half a Soul

“Agnes and Havelock’s delicious slow-burn romance is delightful in the way that they bring out the worst and best in each other, even as they discover that neither is quite what they initially thought. The cats are charmingly underfoot every step of the way, and the magic is destructive and seductive. . . . Readers will enjoy the 1920s Montreal setting, while those who love cozy fantasy romances such as The Crescent Moon Tearoom by Stacy Sivinski and Freya Marske’s Last Binding series will be delighted by Havelock, Agnes, and her cats.”Library Journal (starred review)

“A perfect pick for readers who love Howl’s Moving Castle, cozy fantasy, romantasy, magic-induced pandemonium and—of course—cats.”BookPage, starred review
