Synopsis

Helen Hayes MacArthur (October 10, 1900 - March 17, 1993) was an American actress. Often referred to as the "First Lady of American Theatre," she was the second person and first woman to win the EGOT (an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award), and the first person to win the Triple Crown of Acting. Hayes was in the inaugural class of inductees to the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1972. She also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian honor, from President Ronald Reagan in 1986 and, two years later, was awarded the National Medal of Arts. The following interview is from 1974.

About Helen Hayes

Helen Hayes (1900–1993) was an actress whose career spanned almost seventy years. She eventually garnered the nickname “First Lady of the American Theatre” and was one of a mere handful of people who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award. Hayes also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian honor, from President Ronald Reagan in 1986, and she was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1988. The annual Helen Hayes Awards, which have recognized excellence in professional theater in the greater Washington, DC area since 1984, are her namesake.
