Synopsis

Nell Goodman is a good daughter. Her job in the local brewery is the only thing keeping her and her mother afloat. But with her mother becoming increasingly eccentric, Nell is starting to feel the burden of her responsibilities. When Nell goes to George Wilmot, the brewery’s owner, for help he offers her a job as a live-in servant. She begins to grow closer to Devlin, George’s son, and it looks like Nell’s luck is finally changing. An unwelcome discovery and tragedy mean that things suddenly change. Devlin pulls away from Nell, her mother’s behaviour is becoming worse and there are secrets around every corner.

About Catherine King

Catherine King was born in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. A search for her roots - her father, grandfather and great-grandfather all worked with coal, steel or iron - and an interest in local industrial history provided inspiration for her stories. Catherine wrote ten novels, including A Sister's Courage and Her Mother's Secret. Her second novel, Silk and Steel, was shortlisted for the Romantic Novel of the Year award.Catherine sadly passed away in 2015.

This book was far too dull for me to enjoy it. It started off kind of OK with Mabel, a young girl, that's working to get a better life, but then the story took a jump to the future and her daughter Nell took over and then the story started to drag. I just didn't care for her and her mother anymore b......more

I loved this book and read it in just over a day. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because I was slightly disappointed with the ending. There was the happy ending that you want but, for me, there were also quite a few unanswered questions. Overall though a great book.......more
