Synopsis

A moving picture book debut, adapted for audio, about depression, sensory awareness, and the power of listening, from psychologist and author of Teaching Kids to be Kind.

Coen is having a sniffling, sighing, sobbing kind of day.

His family thinks they know how to cheer him up. His dad wants to go outside and play, Mom tells her funniest joke, and his little sister shares her favorite teddy. Nothing helps. But one by one, they get quiet and begin to listen. After some time, space, and reassurance, Coen is able to show them what he needs.

With poignant prose, A Blue Kind of Day explores how depression might feel in the body and shows us how to support the people we love with patience, care, and empathy.

Written by psychologist Rachel Tomlinson, this book is a beautiful, thoughtful look at childhood depression that is clear without ever becoming pedantic. A Blue Kind of Day is an important book in the canon of children's picture books about mental health. This book deals very specifically with depression and does so with so much grace and dignity. What Rachel Tomlinson does so perfectly in this book is help to establish what depression looks and feel......more

Coen is having a blue kind of day, where he's not interested in any of the activities or coping strategies that his family suggests. It's hard when children are sad or have depression because they don't have words to describe their feelings. This story emphasizes following children's queues. Feeling......more
